The Mig Welding Technique
when im
Mig welding I typically will not pulse, stitch, or push the weld.
-I usually do not stitch weld simply because you typically are rarely getting the penetration you want
-I don't push from right to left simply because it's actually more difficult to obtain penetration since the weld is now being sent away from your molten puddle un like the pulling technique where by your wire is pushing in into the molten puddle furthermore the mig weld is allot more difficult to control to make the weld look attractive.
The main
Mig welding technique i use is sort of different than other techniques for example "C" or "e" though i actually do utilize the "e" in certain situations The technique i prefer is actually a back and fourth motion whilst pulling left to right ( but if your a lefty the exact opposite applies) with the nozzle of the gun at a forty-five degree angle. i aim the wire down the middle of the joint where the 2 metals connect.
I will use a "e" formation if you have a thicker piece of steel on one side compared to other in that instance i'll push the weld in a "e" formation in the direction of thicker part.
Hand Speed and Hand Position
Lets start with the Hand placement
- grasp the trigger portion of the gun with your right hand with the ability to swivel your wrist ( similar to the throttle of a motorcycle)
- your going to want to place the bend of the gun in between your pointer finger and thumb while using the top of your hand resting on the bench.
- your left hand is going to be the point for the gun to pivot on and also to stabilize the nozzle.
-your right hand is will be the component which twists to acquire the back and forth movement that produces the mig weld beads.
- Also your gonna want to loosen up your arms and hands to help you glide your left hand over the table to follow the weld down the entire joint.
Hand Speed
I recall when i was initially getting started out i was often mig welding like i was in a big hurry but you don't want to. you need to relax your grip ( the gun seriously isn't going anywhere)
-when you start the weld, relax!! do a nice little cycle to seal off the end of the metal
- next pull to the right around a one half inch or less in a partial fast movement
- After that push the puddle returning over what weld i recently laid down in a slower pace watching the bead make a nice spherical puddle
- any time i push back i keep an eye on the space of the bead before and try and match up the stoping point of the puddle i did previously. thats how i know how far i need to push back the puddle.
